🌦️ Climate and season
Most of the year San Cristóbal has a mild climate with pleasant days and nights. The warmest month is March, with an average temperature that does not exceed 21 °C. The coldest is January, with an average below 11 °C.
Palenque has a tropical climate. There is significant rainfall, even in the driest month. The average temperature is 26.6 °C.
The rainiest months are usually June and September. In September and October there is heavy rain that can last more than 24 hours due to hurricane season, which brushes the region without notably affecting it. Even so, tour services do operate.
The best time to travel to Chiapas is January to May and July to December, when the weather is pleasant or warm with light to moderate rainfall.
Jeans, sneakers, t-shirts, and shorts are very comfortable for most visits. High heels and sandals are not recommended, especially at archaeological sites. Pack for warm weather: in Tuxtla Gutiérrez, Palenque, and the jungle it's hot and humid almost year-round. For San Cristóbal, bring warm clothing.
🏘️ San Cristóbal de las Casas
The best area is downtown, near the zócalo. We recommend Hotel Jovel, on Flavio A. Paniagua street, 5 blocks from the center and 3 from Guadalupe pedestrian street. The area is full of restaurants, bars, and shops, ideal for your stay.
We recommend Coffee 5 Elementos, at Real de Guadalupe #112, Guadalupe neighborhood, a few meters from the famous Guadalupe pedestrian street.
Starters: bread soup, butifarra, cured meats, chalupas, longaniza, chorizo, heart of palm, tachilhuil, and pickled beef head. Main dishes: asado coleto, turkey in mole, chanfaina, beef cecina, adobo pork ribs, and salted meat.
San Cristóbal can be very affordable if you eat at fondas, markets, and comida corrida spots. There are accessible and delicious options with traditional flavors. Per person you can spend between 150 and 200 pesos a day choosing these options.
